Good morning! When you are using PDF2ANKI, you might have encountered scenarios where the cards generated are great, but not 100% perfect. Today we dive into how we can use Prompt Engineering to make REALLY GOOD cards. We are also excited to give you a sneak peak on our upcoming flashcard library, which will allow you to turn BORING textbook into studiable anki flashcards.

👨‍💻 How You Can Use Prompt Engineering to Make Really High-Quality Cards đź’Ż

In PDF2ANKI v3.0, we have introduced a brand new function which allows you to refine and regenerate the flashcards generated by typing in a prompt. We are really glad that a lot of you like this new change!

Here’s more - other than the usual prompts like “be more concise” or “more cards about ___”, there is a lot more that you can do with this. Here is what we would do for our studies:

1. Focusing on Clinical Relevance

Initial AI-generated flashcard:

  • Q: What does the LAD and its branches supply?

  • A: Anterior 2/3 of interventricular septum, anterolateral papillary muscle, and anterior surface of LV.

User-written prompt for refinement:

Craft a flashcard that connects fetal abnormalities such as foramen ovale to potential disruptison. Highlight how fetal abnormalities can manifest in different activities in newborn and adult.

Refined AI-generated flashcard:

  • Q: How does an occlusion of the LAD artery typically present in a patient?

  • A:

    • An occlusion of the LAD artery commonly presents as chest pain or angina pectoris, and can lead to an anterior myocardial infarction, which is manifested by electrocardiographic changes such as ST-segment elevation.

2. Aligning with Current Study Topics

Initial AI-generated flashcard:

  • Q: What factors affect myocardial oxygen demand?

  • A: Contractility, Afterload, Heart rate, Diameter of ventricle.

User-written prompt for refinement:

I'm currently studying the pharmacological interventions for cardiovascular function. Can you create a flashcard that details the mechanism of the various drugs that will affect the preload of the heart.

Refined AI-generated flashcard:

  • Q: How does digoxin affect contractility and subsequently preload and afterload?

  • A: Digoxin increases contractility by inhibiting the Na+/K+ pump, leading to increased intracellular calcium. This can indirectly decrease preload and afterload by improving cardiac output. Improved contractility and cardiac output can lead to better emptying of the ventricles during systole. This, in turn, can decrease the residual volume of blood left in the ventricles after each contraction, reducing preload.

Knowing more about prompt engineering is helpful not only when making flashcards on PDF2ANKI, but whenever you use AI.
